Tip of the Week
It’s Halloween week and the pumpkins are being carved.
Once carved, they will only last a few days before going mouldy so a trick to keep them looking fresh longer is don’t cut off the top. Removing the stem of any fruit or vegetable will reduce its life. Better to cut out the back or the bottom to get out all the seeds.
Pumpkins are really cheap and plentiful at this time of year. How about pumpkin hummus, pumpkin soup, pumpkin bake, pumpkin curry or, of course, pumpkin pie.
The world’s largest pumpkin pie on record used 109 gallons of evaporated milk, 233 dozen eggs and 525lbs of sugar. It was 20 feet in diameter and weighed 3699 pounds.
Alert
Don’t wear your clothes inside out and walk backwards on Halloween or you might see a witch at midnight!
Weekly Food Fact
Did you know that the word Pumpkin was made famous by the fairy tale Cinderella. Before that they were called Pompions. They are now grown on every continent except Antarctica.
